Soup Chick turns two, and a birthday giveaway

When I asked on our Facebook page how we should celebrate Soup Chick's second birthday, most of the ideas involved soup.

Red soup, in particular, because Soup Chick's birthday falls on Valentine's Day.

Yes, soup would be lovely, but to me, birthdays mean Chinese takeout and chocolate ice cream and presents, and because you've been here, week after week, many of you since the very beginning, I'd like to give you a present. (If you all lived closer, I'd invite you for Chinese takeout, too.)

Have I told you lately how much I love my immersion blender? I'm sure it's made me a much better soup maker. With it, I purée hot soups right in the pot, saving time (and clean-up!) and letting me control whether I want a soup that's smooth or chunky. And it works equally well on cold soups like gazpacho.

Cuisinart no longer makes the model I've owned for at least 10 years, so here's what I'm giving away to two lucky readers this week:

Cuisinart CSB-76 SmartStick 200-Watt Immersion Hand Blender

This immersion blender has a powerful motor, yet it's fairly lightweight. And it comes in red. (Also in green, orange, pink, white, chrome, teal and magenta -- winners can choose.) It's highly rated, and I think you'll like it.

You don't need to jump through hoops to enter. Simply leave a comment on this post and wish Soup Chick a happy birthday, any time before 11:59 p.m. (Rhode Island time) on Friday, February 17, 2012.

That's it. I'll let the random generator pick two winners -- one for each year of soups -- and I'll post the winners' names and comment numbers on Saturday. (Note: can be shipped to U.S. and international addresses.)

Thank you all for being here, for sharing your recipes and feedback and ideas and creativity, for catching my typos and adapting the recipes to your own tastes and pantries, and, most of all, for loving soup.

By the way, the immersion blender also makes smoothies, apple sauce, salad dressing and whipped cream. Alton Brown calls it a boat motor, though I've never tested mine in quite that way.

[PS: Cuisinart did not provide this item, and I have no relationship with the company.]

I know I'm probably the 100th person to say this, but have a "souper" birthday! It's bad, I know, but I'm so glad your blog exists! :D Have a great day! :D

Happy birthday to you, Soup Chick, and I would have posted a Happy birthday to you even if I wasn't hoping to win the Immersion hand blender, although I really do want to win. While I am at it, would you have any tips/suggestions for minimizing the spraying mess when using the hand blender in the soup pot? Thanks!

I already have one of these immersion blenders, and it's great! So if you happen to pick my name out of the hat, choose someone else. But Happy Birthday, SC! So glad you're here and going strong!

To think that I've only been a Soup Chick groupie for less than a year - that means that I missed out on at least a year of great soup! Happy 2nd Birthday!

Happy Birthday, Soup Chick! I remember being young and poor and living on potato soup with onions. It was damn good, too.

I still love soups of all kinds and appreciate your sharing ideas and recipes.
