Seven soups every Saturday: vegetarian soup recipes

Faced with the prospect of all-turkey, all-the-time, and endless turkey leftovers to be turned into soup, I've been craving soups without a bit of meat in them at all. Root vegetables, beans and pulses form the base of so many of the soups I love at this time of year.

Seven vegetarian soup recipes caught my eye this week:

I'm all out of soup bowl photos to share, so I've been doing a bit of window shopping. Okay, I've been doing some actual shopping, too. You've seen my collection of dozens of blue-and-white Chinese bowls, so you're probably not surprised that I had to buy this set of four imari bowls from Viva Terra. They're the perfect size for soup.

If you'd like to share photos of seven soup bowls from your kitchen -- or from a friend's house, or your parents' attic, or an antique shop, or a housewares store, or a school or restaurant -- I'd love to feature those photos on Saturdays.

It's easy: send one photo, of seven soup bowls or soup mugs. The bowls must all be able to be used for eating soup, and they absolutely do not have to match. Send the largest file your camera will allow; I'll size it to fit. Make sure the photo is in focus (very important). Tell me whose bowls are in the photo, or where you took the picture. If you're a blogger, I'll link to your blog.

These all sound unique and wonderful. They are all healthy, which is what I look for as I make soups for people with cancer. Looking forward to trying them and adding them to my soup collection.

Kalyn, I have my husband Ted to thank for that blue mosaic background. It's a 12x12 trivet that he made especially to show off my blue-and-white bowl collection.

Jeanette, so many vegetable soups don't use cream for thickness or texture, making them very light and healthy. I'm glad you're finding some good ideas on this list.

Mmmm, lentil soup! I have added your site to my favorites, as I'm a soup nut for sure. I eat soup all year, even in hot weather. Thanks so much for the ideas & inspirations.
