Seven soups every Saturday: corn soup recipes

Seven gift bowls

Here in Rhode Island, Dame Farm, which has been managed by the same family for more than 100 years, grows the very best corn. Granted, this is only my opinion, but judging by the number of cars that pull up every day for dozens -- dozens -- of picked-that-morning ears at a time, I'm not the only one who thinks so. The Dame family begins to harvest early varieties during the week after July 4, and then we have sweet, delicious corn for two months. Bliss!

Seven corn soup recipes caught my eye this week:

Cream of corn soup, from House of Annie

Chinese crab and corn soup, from Apple Pie, Patis, and Pâté

Summer squash and fresh corn soup, from Stephencooks

Tomato and corn soup with basil, from In Praise of Sardines

Chilled corn and golden beet soup, from No Recipes

Roasted red pepper, lentil and corn soup, from Albion Cooks

Southwest corn soup with roasted cheese chips, from Hot Off the Garlic Press

These are seven bowls people have given me as gifts since Soup Chick made its debut. The three that match are from my husband, a lovely "welcome, Soup Chick" present. The three with handles are from my neighbor Marcia, who found them deep in a cupboard while packing her house for a cross-country move. And the flowered bowl in the foreground is one that my friend Bev found at a thrift shop. I love them all!

If you'd like to share photos of seven soup bowls from your kitchen -- or from a friend's house, or your parents' attic, or an antique shop, or a housewares store, or a school or restaurant -- I'd love to share those photos on Saturdays.

Here are the ground rules: send one photo, of seven soup bowls. The bowls must all be able to be used for eating soup (no mixing bowls or troughs, please). Send the largest file your camera will allow; I'll size it to fit. Make sure the photo is in focus (very important). Tell me whose bowls are in the photo, or where you took the picture. If you're a blogger, I'll link to your blog.

That's it. One photo, seven soup bowls. Email to lydia AT ninecooks DOT com.

Thanks for the mention, Lydia!

We have corn growing all year round here in Kuching, but the varieties are not as sweet as the ones in the US. Which means that, while they aren't as good grilled, they are pretty good in soups :-)
