Seven soups every Saturday: curry soup recipes

Bob's seven brown chowder mugs

In my time, I've slurped many bowls of soup, but the best curry soup I've ever had, anywhere, was the bowl of red curry coconut soup with mussels that Ted and I, and blogging friends Kalyn and Genie, shared at Fog City Diner in San Francisco a couple of years ago. We scooped up every drop of that soup, with pieces of bread, with spoons, and perhaps with our fingers! Whether you start with Thai curry paste, or with Indian curry powder, you can transform the most basic ingredients into a soup that lingers on the back of your tongue. Often tempered with coconut milk, curry soups aren't always hot, but they are always complex, bringing together warm spices and chile peppers in a seductive way.

These seven curry soup recipes caught my eye this week:

Beet curry soup, from Mac & Cheese

Kare udon (curry udon soup), from Closet Cooking

Curried lentil soup with cilantro, from Kalyn's Kitchen

Thai curry lime noodle soup with fried egg, from Bitchin' Camero

Curry cauliflower soup with honey, from Sunday Nite Dinner

Chicken and coconut Thai curry soup, from Pinkbites

African sweet potato soup with peanut butter, black-eyed peas and beans, from Gluten-Free Goddess

----------

My friend Bob, whose pottery studio is a few miles up the road from my house, makes lovely chowder mugs that I love to use for all kinds of soups. Here are seven of his brown chowder mugs, on the porch outside the studio.

If you'd like to share photos of seven soup bowls from your kitchen -- or from a friend's house, or your parents' attic, or an antique shop, or a housewares store, or a school or restaurant -- I'd love to share those photos on Saturdays.

Here are the ground rules: send one photo, of seven soup bowls. The bowls must all be able to be used for eating soup (no mixing bowls or troughs, please). Send the largest file your camera will allow; I'll size it to fit. Make sure the photo is in focus (very important). Tell me whose bowls are in the photo, or where you took the picture. If you're a blogger, I'll link to your blog.

That's it. One photo, seven soup bowls. Email to lydia AT ninecooks DOT com.

Oh yes, that red coconut curry soup with musssels from Fog City Diner was indeed heavenly. Very memorable.

That curry soup in SF sounds killer. There's nothing like the combo of curry and coconut milk. That creamy sweet and spicy bite. Yes, please.
