Seven soups every Saturday: tortilla soup recipes

Chicken_tortilla_soup

My earliest memory of really good tortilla soup involves blazing hot sun, ice cold cerveza, and a roadside restaurant in a dusty village near Lake Chapala, Mexico. We'd stopped for lunch with my husband Ted's aunt and uncle, who retired to the area many years ago, and as hot as we were, we all ordered soup to help us cool down. It's true that spicy food cools your body, and it's equally true that good tortilla soup is a comfort food 10 on a scale of 1 to 10. Lime makes this soup special, though the recipe, like all traditional recipes, varies with the soup maker.

Seven tortilla soup recipes caught my eye this week:

Slow cooker chicken tortilla soup, from Andrea Meyers

Vegetarian tortilla soup, from 101 Cookbooks

Texas chicken tortilla soup, from Confections of a Foodie Bride

Chipotle chicken tortilla soup, from Eclectic Recipes

Chicken tortilla soup with bacon, chipotle and fire roasted tomato, from The Bacon Show

Cream of tortilla soup, from Cooking in Kansas City

Vegan tortilla soup, from Oh She Glows

Find more delicious tortilla soup recipes on Food Blog Search. Come back every Saturday for seven soup recipes to enjoy any day of the week.

Happy 2nd birthday to Soup Chick!! (I missed saying that on your last post). This blog is a source of inspiration week after week. The tortilla soups look fantastic- I was taught a version by a former roommate. It calls for habanero pepper and I still make it often.

Congrats to the winners, and hope you stretched out Soup Chick's 2nd birthday celebration, Lydia! Tortilla soup is quite popular here in the gfe house. :-) All of these recipes really look fantastic. And better yet, all are naturally gluten free, with the exception of ones in which flour tortillas being used, but that's an easy replacement. Off to share!

Thanks for the roundup! Have a great weekend!
Shirley

Nupur, hi! Thanks for the birthday greetings. I'd love a tortilla soup with habanero pepper.

Shirley, we always appreciate your help in identifying soups that are naturally gluten free. Thanks so much.

I remember the very first time I ever had Tortilla Soup (made by my sister Laurel.) Love it, and that photo is making me drool!

I've been seeing tortilla soups a lot lately around the web. Haven't made any this winter yet, but it's definitely time to. Love the idea of making it in the crockpot.

Kalyn, I remember the taste of my first tortilla soup, too. I wonder why this soup triggers so many taste memories?

Jeanette, I'm into anything I can make in the crockpot! This winter I'm using mine more than ever.

Thanks for featuring my chicken tortilla soup! It's one of our favorites, and making it in the slow cooker is so easy.
