Seven soups every Saturday: black bean soup recipes

In the house where I grew up, no one even thought to eat black bean soup. To us, soup meant chicken soup (homemade with matzoh balls, or canned with noodles), or tomato soup from the red-and-white can. Occasionally we had clam chowder, the real New England kind, but never homemade. So, when I went off to college and began to cook with beans, as every college kid on a budget learns to do, the whole vista of black bean soups opened up to me. Spicy, sweet, smooth or chunky, I loved them all. And, to this day, I've never tired of them.

Lydia, like you, I didn't grow up with many different kinds of soups. Black bean is definitely one of my favorites now. All the ones you've linked to sound terrific, but now I'm really intrigued by Lucia's suggestion. Now that soup of yours sounds fantastic! :-)

went to review and wanted to print the Hearty lentil and black bean soup with smoked paprika, from Cookin' Canuck and found the directions, but not the ingredient list! Did I miss is somewhere?

Good thing it's gotten cold again. Not enough soup weather this winter.
I'm out of black beans at the moment, but these soups are calling me. Looks like pinto soup coming up...
